Linocut from Linoleum Cutting Demo

Here's another low quality photo (because I keep forgetting my camera) of another linocut I used for my Beginning Printmaking Class. This linocut of tree bark was drawn out with a lot more detail than the last just to give the students another example. This one I used to demonstrate different cutting techniques during class (and then demonstrated printing the other linocut from Monday's post).

There's a lot left to be cut out on this one before I would print it... but it's a start.

First Relief Demo

Here are some terrible photos (because I forgot my camera) of the linocut I cut out ahead and then printed during my relief printing demo for my Beginning Printmaking class.

Prep Prep Prep

Yup, school starts tomorrow and I'm knee-deep in final preparations for the first day of Beginning, Intermediate & Advanced Printmaking classes at UW Parkside. Nothing to report besides constantly triple-checking and tweaking my syllabi and other materials.

Return to Blogging...

This summer has flown by, and unfortunately in that time I've been letting my blog collect dust and posting only a few sporadic times. I haven't been do making much new art... I've been busy with doing one show at Artworks' allery, slowly getting back print exchanges, and mostly preparing to teach at UW Parkside. Classes start in just a few days, so I'm sure I'll be posting about my demos and hopefully some new work that they've inspired.

In the meantime, here I am with the other participants online at PrintZero's print exchange website (toward the bottom of the page).

I helped stretch two of these 12 x 28 feet canvas paintings all day yesterday and hung them today...

Pre- Print Exhibit

Yesterday I dropped off work and hung a couple pieces at Artworks in Kenosha for the Printmaking Invitational Exhibit. I'm getting excited for the reception Saturday night!

Printing Photos

I had a photographer while I was finishing up my edition, so today I'll share a few in-progress hand-printing shots of the last layer.

PrintZero Exchange Print

I finally finished the edition for PrintZero's 8th annual Exchange! (See here for more info.)

(I'm sorry that the white ink is hard to see, depending on your computer screen... but it's also hard enough to see in person depending on the light.)

Printmaking Invitational Exhibit

(I thought I had written about this already, but apparently I didn't... oops.)

From July 14th through August 31st Artworks in Kenosha, WI will be showing an all-printmakers invitational exhibit. It will be featuring some pretty great local printmakers: Lisa Bigalke, Doug DiVinny, Ed Kalke, Amy Misurelli Sorensen, & myself.

Be there for the reception on the 14th from 6-9pm if you can!

New Name

Something is different!

Now that I'm a married lady I've surrendered my last name of Wierschke for Ulm. (This name is shorter & simpler to spell, but still likely to be mispronounce!)

Thus you'll notice that my blog, online portfolio, email, etc. have undergone the name change process as well.

And so, after much frustrated fist-shaking at the google & blogger systems, this blog has officially become aliciaulm.blogspot.com

Enjoy!

Summer Break & Changes

It's about that time when things are getting crazy busy for me and I need to take a break from blogging.

This Saturday I'll be walking at Kendall College's Commencement ceremony (even though I finished back in December). This weekend I'll also be moving all of my things to Milwaukee and living in limbo for a few weeks until my wedding.

That said, I haven't decided what to do yet with the name of this blog (& my online portfolio) since I'll be changing my name.

I also realized that I have not yet written about it here, but after the move to WI I will be teaching two printmaking classes as an adjunct at UW Parkside this coming fall semester, and I couldn't be more excited. :)

Stay tuned for these exciting changes and more !

Second Layer - Light Green

Second layer of ribbons printed (on top of that white layer from before). This one is not due until July, but after some testing of the third layer I might call this one done.

Yellow Landscape

I printed the landscape linocut (that I had first made for my continuing studies class demo) on top of the yellow for an exchange.

I printed one of them on the back for fun because I thought the texture was interesting.

Yellow

I printed lots of solid layers of yellow today... all for yet another new exchange print.

Exchange - First White Layer

It's hard to see, but I printed the first layer in white for yet another exchange print.

I've finally started printing my print for a Madonna-themed exchange. First off, a solid layer of very light blue.

Art.Downtown Update

Yesterday & today I spent some time hanging my work up at the Rapid Growth space at 9 Jefferson for Art.Downtown. It's just about done & ready except for one I want to hang in a window (because we didn't have a ladder today), and I need to add some artist labels. I didn't take a photo because I don't want to spoil the surprise of what work I decided to show.

So again, I hope to see all of you who can make it this Friday, 6-11pm in downtown Grand Rapids for Art.Downtown.2012 !

Art.Downtown 2012

I'm participating in this year's Art.Downtown, and will be showing in the Rapid Growth space at 9 Jefferson with 4 other great local artists. See you there this Friday the 13th from 6-11pm!

Madonna - Second Woodcutting

I cleaned up a lot of the rough edges after pulling the first proof, and now this wood block is ready for more proofing.

Thursday, April 5, 2012

Madonna Exchange - First Proof

My design  for the Madonna Exchange underwent a few changes, but I roughly cut everything out & pulled a proof.

Skull - Edition Printed

They're done printing! Now I just need to choose the best 15, label them, & send them in to the exchange.

Skull - Finished Cutting and Final Proof

All finished cutting out my skull, and here's a proof to prove it. All that's left is to finish the edition.

Skull - First Layer Printed

They don't look like much yet, but the first layer on the prints with "the skull print" for an exchange have all been printed. It's just a layer of flat tan color because I felt that the off-white of the paper was still too light.

Monotype Demos

I forgot to take a photo of one thing and tools to work on another.... so all I've found to post about are some of my monotype process demo prints.

Skull Proof

Here's the skull exchange print, inked & ready for proofing...

... and here's a proof. Next up, more woodcutting.

Linocut - First Print

Here's my linocut landscape, inked and ready to print...

... and here's the first print. I think I will clean it up a bit and pull some more good prints.

Skull - Cut and Ready for Proofing

My skull woodcut is right at the point where I need to pull a proof and make some decisions on how I want to finish it.
