Another Finished Monotype/Drawing

This third and final monotype/drawing of this suite of three is done. I must admit that I struggled with this one the most. In the past week it's made tremendous progress and likely looks very different since last I wrote about it. It's done!

Finished Monotype/Drawing

Last time I thought I was nearly done with this drawing, but I decided that I wanted an overall darker tone and got rid of some of the greenish mid-tones and replaced them with a thin layer of charcoal to even things out. Now it's done!

Screen Print - Second Layer

Second layer of my screen print has been printed! Now that it's finished I just need to edition it.

Screen Print - First Layer

I'm joining the Print II class that I assist in their screen print portfolio exchange project. They all must be 10 x 10 inches and fit with the theme of "secrets".  Thus, my tangled masses in this instance are mimicking the toxic tangle which too many secrets can cause.

Here's the first layer...

Monotype Experiments

I had a bit of fun doing some abstract monotypes on different materials. Not sure yet what I'll do with them and how they fit into the grand scheme of things.

Drawing on Monotypes

I realized that I haven't written anything about this monotype/drawing yet, so here's a look at its early progress from print to subtractive drawing. Now I'm currently in the slow tweaking and refining stage of drawing.

First Finished 9ft Print

I haven't been able to take a good photo of the entire first finished 9ft print, but I've managed to get a few decent detail shots. I guess I'll consider these as sneak peaks until the print is installed at my solo show.

Printing 9ft Woodcuts

As I printed the first layers on my 9 ft prints with the 5 blocks, I really take up a large section of the print room to ink them up...

... as well as drying them in my studio.

I've never printed quite this large before, and it's interesting to say the least. I forgot to take a photo of my strange printing system on the press... (I have to roll up both ends as I move along the print on a too-small press bed).

Cutting out New Blocks

It's a little difficult to find enough space to spread out the whole 5-block print in my studio space, but here's a better look at it sketched out with the 3 previously made blocks.

Here are some in-progress photos as I finished cutting both 2 x 2 ft blocks over the past 2 days. I was on a roll, and so created some impressive piles of wood shavings... and my arms are pretty tired too.

Now I look forward to printing them... the 5 blocks will create a 9ft print all together!

Happy Labor Day!

To celebrate Labor Day I did not do anything printmaking related, but I will show you some more in progress photos of prints...

Saturday, September 3, 2011

I'm going to sound like quite the broken record as I continue to add more layers to woodcuts every time I update this blog... but here are some more in-progress looks at what I've been printing.

Finishing Woodcuts (?)

I think these two are done, but as the artist I reserve the right to retract that statement if I feel so inclined in the future. (I'm rather indecisive this week.)
