Taking a Break (?)

I won't have much printing activity to show you blog readers over the next few weeks, so I'm writing to tell you now that I'm going to take a short semester's end hiatus from writing.

That doesn't mean I won't be busy. The next week or so will be spent working on getting the print room & Kendall ready and looking great for Open House and other such end-of-the-year activities. Soon after that I'll be taking a well-needed vacation. And once I return I'll begin teaching my introduction to printmaking class in mid-May, as well as taking my own drawing graduate course as an elective. So come mid-May I should have plenty to start blogging about again.

Semester's End

It's the end of the semester - I only have one final critique in my printmaking class tomorrow and I'll be done. This semester flew by much too quickly!

Animal Print Exchange Portfolio

Today I helped the Kendall & GVSU volunteers to organize and exchange prints for our 4-school print exchange (the animal-themed exchange for which I made my jellyfish prints).

Here's the portfolio cover that we all helped assemble, screen-printed by Brett Colley.

And here's a glance at the 16 marvelous prints I received from other participants!

Yesterday I neglected to update my blog due to the hectic but wonderful festivities of Art.Downtown.

The Kendall MFA Club put on a show of the 35 grads' works in the Grandville studios.

Little Ribbon Blocks

I planned & cut out these 12 little ribbon blocks in probably a span of 24 hours. At about 2 x 3 inches they are pretty tiny in comparison to the other blocks.

New Prints

I finished two prints yesterday. They're a mixture of old and new woodblocks.

(This last image is a detail of the second print.)

Second Layers

I started the first layer on a new batch of 6 prints yesterday. Then today I printed the second layer on some of them and on two of the other ribbon prints.

Print Party

Yesterday during my printmaking class we took a field trip over to visit the students at Grand Valley State University's print shop. Of course I forgot to take my camera, but you can check them out at their website if you're curious. During our visit we viewed all the portfolio pieces from the print exchange we did between our schools and Central Michigan University and Metropolitan State College of Denver. As well as much snacking & mingling. A good time was had by all!

More Early Layers of Ribbons

I'm not quite satisfied with how these are turning out... I think I'm going to start some new ones with different old blocks layered in next time.

Early Layers of Printed Ribbons

I added a second layer to some prints I had first printed a yellow layer. Then I did the first layer or two on some large okawara sheets. I plan to have many layers on these prints, so I think the progress is going to feel rather slow but steady.

Artist Talk & Museum Visit

Ladislov Hanka is giving an artist talk at the Grand Rapids Art Museum tonight, as part of his exhibit that just opened there. I first saw Lad's art some months ago there at the GRAM, and soon afterwards my professor took me to visit his studio, so I'm quite excited to go to his talk tonight!
