New Business Card

Oops, I'm losing track of the days. I apologize for missing yesterday, everyone!

Here's a look at my new business card. This blog made it on the card, so I thought it fitting to write about the card in the blog.

Old & New

Who's got a shiny new brayer? This girl. Yes, I do get extremely excited about new art supplies.

The old brayer has lately kicked the bucket & won't turn anymore. Farewell, old friend.

Speaking of farewells to old friends, I've been keeping my empty ink tubes and they're starting to make an decent collection. I already need to add three more small tubes of ink to the pile.

Testing "Accidents"

I knew I was rushing to get this one printed right after I had done those prints in red-ish hues, and would have to work with some "happy accidents". I didn't completely get all the red cleaned off the blocks or let them dry before printing a different color. Thus, when I inked the blocks and printed them in this light blue, I knew that a bit of the red residue would show up on the resulting print. I actually like it a lot, and will probably consciously do it again in the future.

First Year MFA Review

I passed! With "excellent" & "good" marks to boot. I was especially complimented on my great paper-writing (thanks to those who helped edit), speaking skills, confidence,  great quantity of work, and excellent craft.  I got some constructive feedback & I'm moving forward.

Here's a look at the prints I picked & set up for the review (with hanging help from Damian). Makes it look like I've been quite busy this past year.... which I have been!

They go in mostly chronological order...

Seasonal colors

Yes, I am continuing to prove my tendency to print colors in accordance with the seasons.

I'm not completely satisfied with the two prints on the left, but I like the one on the right.

More to come...

I'm going to bring up that Midland show again, because I won their "Award of Merit" for 2D artwork prize!

Here's a reminder of the now award-winning print...

Tiny Squares

Here is another one of the new sets of woodcuts. These little squares are only 2 x 2 inches big. I'm not entirely please with some of those beat up edges, & I may need to tweak the cutting before printing again. I changed up how the lines match up so that I could do some staggered patterns.

Here's a photo of the blocks...

And printed...

Here's them printed in white...

... And an experiment on tracing paper. I was holding it up to the light to see how it looked, & the photograph doesn't really do it justice.

New Look: Opposite

Here's one of the new sets of woodcuts that I first printed on Monday. It's the opposite of what I normally do - the curvilinear lines get inked while the negative space was cut out.

Here's a better shot of what's going on with the blocks when inked up.

Here's a test of what it looks like printed once on newsprint...

And here's what two layers look like...

With these I'm planning on doing multiple layers on a large 4x 6 -ish ft okawara. The arrangement will also be a lot more interesting as I'd like to stagger them and play more with overlapping. And more color!

I printed my three new sets of blocks tonight.... and I forgot to take photos! I apologize. I'll have to make up for it by flooding the blog with images on Wednesday.

Another "oops" - I started running my finger through the press. I feel a bit ashamed. I've gotten close, but never done something so silly before. Fingertip feels only a little sensitive.

My Artprize Print on Display Now

As of yesterday, my print in Calvin 106 Gallery's exhibit "Configuration" in conjunction with Artprize is officially open to the public!

Check it out in person if you get the chance! If you are able to vote for me during Artprize, please do so. Remember, Artprize opens on September 22nd!

In the meantime, I'll keep plugging away at my artist statement & other preparations for my MFA first year review.

New Woodblocks

I've been a wood-cutting fiend the last 24 hours. Three new sets of blocks got cut out & ready for printing. Granted, some of them are quite small. The larger ones I had started, but got mostly cut out just now. Stay tuned to see them printed.

Another Artprize Update

Just got this in the mail today... it's me on the mailer for the exhibit at Calvin 106 Gallery with Artprize!

You can also see hints of what the other artwork in the exhibit looks like.

Tomorrow I will actually be installing the work in the gallery, & starting Friday the exhibit will be open to the public.

I encourage all of you (who can make it) to stop in for the official Artprize Opening Reception on September 22nd. If you can't make that day, please stop in before the exhibit (& Artprize) ends on October 10. Even better, please vote for my print!

Early Stages

Here's a sneak peek at some of my new projects. I'm all over the place this week! Must be more of the back-to-school mode.

First, new woodblocks that I'm cutting out differently than usual... you'll see what I mean when they are printed.

Next, my sketch for a collagraph... which will make more sense when printed as well.

I didn't take a photo, but I've got two litho stones levigated today & ready to be drawn with litho crayons & tusche washes. They'll be similar to the last litho I did this summer.

I've got a big shiny new piece of copper for polishing up my intaglio skills. I haven't done much etching lately, but it would be good to keep it up. I'd like to experiment to see how I can best transfer these patterns over to that medium.

I'm also in the process of prepping my print for hanging for Artprize. Here's proof of it hanging in my studio drying after I applied wax medium.

I'm going to apologize in advance because I don't know if I will have internet access this weekend. Sorry, but unfortunately no internet means no blog updates.
